How to verify a California contractor’s license and insurance
Get the sub’s license number, look it up on the CSLB site, and confirm the license is active and the class matches the work. Then ask for a workers’ comp certificate or exemption, and call the agent to confirm the policy. A clean license check is a good second signal, because licenses get suspended when required coverage lapses.

Why license status helps
The CSLB says a license is suspended if required workers’ comp lapses. A suspended or inactive license is a signal to stop and ask. A license check doesn’t replace the certificate. It’s a second look.
What the license check can’t tell you
- It doesn’t show general liability coverage.
- It doesn’t show endorsements like additional insured.
- It doesn’t show a renewal that’s coming up soon.
Those still need the certificate and the agent. Our service handles both.

Not legal or insurance advice. This is general information. Your contract, your state and your policy decide what applies to you. Ask your broker or attorney.
A simple routine on every job
- Before the sub starts, get the certificate and workers’ comp proof, or the exemption paperwork your state allows.
- Look the contractor up on the state license board’s website and read what the lookup shows.
- Save a copy with the date you checked and who checked.
- Put every policy end date on a calendar.
- Ask a local attorney or broker about anything unusual.
