Certificate of insurance tracking for Texas contractors
Texas is unusual: most private employers may choose not to carry workers’ compensation, so a missing workers’ comp certificate does not always mean a sub is in violation, but it does change your risk. We track certificates for Texas general contractors and explain the state rules that shape what you should require.

Why Texas needs its own approach
Three things set Texas apart: workers’ compensation is optional for most private employers, construction contracts are subject to the state’s anti-indemnity statute, and public-work projects carry their own coverage rules. Each affects which certificates you should ask for, and what a “missing” certificate really means.
Not legal or insurance advice. Statutes change and contracts differ. Verify against the primary source (linked or named) and talk to your broker or attorney before relying on this.

Frequently asked questions
Do Texas contractors need workers’ comp certificates from subs?
Most private employers in Texas may opt out of workers’ compensation, so a sub without it is not automatically non-compliant. But on public projects, state law requires coverage, and many private owners and GCs contractually require it. Your contract and your broker decide what you require.
Which pages should Texas GCs read first?
Start with the subcontractor insurance requirements guide, then workers’ comp verification, then additional insured and indemnity rules.
