Certificate of insurance tracking for New York contractors

Short answer

New York is the strictest certificate environment we cover: its Scaffold Law makes owners and contractors answerable for height-related worker safety, and the state does not accept an ACORD 25 as proof of workers’ compensation. Our New York pages explain what documents to request.

What to collect from a New York sub

  • An ACORD 25 for general liability and other liability lines.
  • For workers’ comp: Form C-105.2 from the carrier, or U-26.3 from the State Insurance Fund. An ACORD form isn’t accepted for this.
  • For disability benefits: Form DB-120.1.
  • Additional insured endorsement pages, not just the box on the certificate.

Where are we in New York?

We start with the Scaffold Law guide. City pages for New York City and beyond are planned once local search tests justify them.

What to do first as a New York contractor

  1. Read the Labor Law 240 guide so you know why insurance requirements matter more on height work.
  2. Ask for New York workers’ comp proof on the forms the state accepts. ACORD forms are not accepted for that proof.
  3. Put additional insured wording in every subcontract, and ask a New York attorney to review it.
  4. Track every policy end date. Try the free audit on your list.

Frequently asked questions

Is an ACORD 25 enough proof of insurance in New York?

For liability, it’s the normal certificate. For workers’ comp and disability benefits, New York doesn’t accept an ACORD form. You need the state forms.

What is the Scaffold Law?

It’s New York Labor Law section 240. It puts a duty on contractors, owners and their agents to provide protective devices for height-related work.
