Certificate of insurance tracking for Houston contractors
We track subcontractor certificates of insurance for Houston-area general contractors. That means collecting each certificate, checking it against your contract, and chasing renewals before policies expire. Houston jobs mix residential, commercial and industrial trades, and Texas’s optional workers’ comp makes careful verification matter.

Free COI auditWhy Houston is a distinct market
Houston’s trade mix is wide: residential and commercial remodeling, industrial and plant work, restoration after storms and heavy subcontracting across all of it. Storm-driven surges bring in unfamiliar subs quickly, which is when certificate checks tend to get skipped.
Typical trade mix described here is general market context, not a measured statistic.
Public-work insurance rules in Houston
Public entities in the Houston area, including the city, Harris County and school districts, publish their own vendor insurance requirements for contracts. Check each entity’s current requirements for limits and proof of coverage before you bid. Texas law also requires workers’ compensation coverage on public projects.
Not legal or insurance advice. Statutes change and contracts differ. Verify against the primary source (linked or named) and talk to your broker or attorney before relying on this.
How to verify Houston-area subs
- Trade licenses: Texas has no statewide general contractor license. It does license some trades: electricians and air conditioning and refrigeration contractors through the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation, and plumbers through the Texas State Board of Plumbing Examiners.
- Workers’ comp: verify in TXCOMP, the state’s coverage lookup. See our Texas verification guide.
- City and county registration: general contractors are regulated by cities through registration and permitting, so check with the city or county where the job is.

Frequently asked questions
Do Houston contractors need a certificate of insurance from every sub?
It depends on your contract and your insurance. Most commercial GCs and owners require one, and public projects require proof of workers’ compensation. Asking is cheap compared with finding a gap after a claim.
