Insurance requirements for plumbing subcontractors
Ask plumbing subs for general liability with strong completed operations coverage, workers’ comp for the whole crew, and commercial auto. Water damage is the big risk, and it often shows up long after the job, behind a finished wall. Check the plumber’s license, and ask whether the policy is occurrence or claims-made.

Free COI auditWhat goes wrong
- Slow leaks. A bad joint can drip inside a wall for months.
- Burst lines. Water everywhere, fast, and often over finished floors.
- Mold afterwards. Water damage can turn into a mold claim.
What to ask for
- General liability with completed operations. This is the one that matters most for plumbing. Read ongoing vs completed operations.
- Occurrence basis. See occurrence vs claims-made. A claims-made policy can leave old work uncovered if the sub stops buying it.
- Workers’ comp for every worker on the crew.
- Commercial auto for work trucks.
Check these too
- License. Most states license plumbers. Look it up. A certificate won’t tell you.
- Exclusions. Ask your broker if the sub’s policy excludes water damage or mold. You won’t see exclusions on the certificate.
